Will Roman Shades Block Too Much of My View or Hold Up Poorly in a Humid Florida Room?
By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County
Homeowners who love Roman shades usually worry about two things here: losing part of the view, and how fabric holds up in Florida humidity.
A raised Roman shade stacks at the top of the window and does block more of the view than a rolled-up roller shade, since the fabric folds rather than coils — worth knowing for a window with a view you don't want obstructed even partially. On humidity, most Roman shade fabrics do fine in a normal conditioned room; the risk is specifically in bathrooms, uncovered lanais, or anywhere with sustained moisture.
Why the stack matters. Because the fabric folds into pleats rather than rolling into a tight tube, a raised Roman shade takes up more vertical space at the top of the window than a roller shade does — usually a matter of several inches, more for a taller window. For a shorter window or one where the top few inches of view genuinely matter, that's worth discussing before ordering.
Where humidity becomes the deciding factor. Natural fiber and certain delicate fabrics are more moisture-sensitive than a synthetic or performance fabric blend. A Roman shade in a primary bathroom with a shower nearby, or anywhere with regular direct steam exposure, is more likely to show wear over time than the same shade in a living room or bedroom.
What I'd do. For a window where preserving the full view matters — especially anything short or positioned over a kitchen sink or water view — I'd look at a roller or cellular shade instead. For humidity-prone rooms, I steer toward performance fabrics built to resist moisture, or a different product entirely for a primary bathroom.
Quick questions
How much window depth does inside mount require?
It depends on the fold style and fabric thickness, but Roman shades generally need more depth than a roller shade.
Can Roman shades be used in a kitchen?
Yes, away from direct splash zones, with a performance fabric rather than a delicate natural fiber.
Is professional cleaning required for Roman shades?
Some fabrics require it; performance and synthetic blends are typically more forgiving for at-home care.
