Solar Shades or Roller Shades: Which One Will Give Me the Right Balance of View, Glare Control, Privacy, and Style?

By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County

This is one of the most common comparisons we walk through in Largo living rooms, because the two shades look similar on a sample board and behave very differently on a sunny window.

Solar shades are built to preserve your view while cutting glare and heat — they're the right call for any window where seeing outside matters. Roller shades, in an opaque or light-filtering fabric, are the right call when privacy or a decorative look matters more than the view itself.

The core difference. A solar shade fabric is woven with a defined openness percentage — the lower the number, the more solid and private, but always at least somewhat see-through, which is the entire point of the product. A roller shade fabric is typically fully opaque or close to it, built for privacy, style, and light control rather than view preservation.

We hear this comparison most from someone furnishing a room with a genuinely good view — a pool, water, a landscaped yard — who also needs real glare and heat control and doesn't want to choose one over the other by accident.

What I'd do. For any window where the view is part of why you bought the house, solar shades. For windows facing a street, a close neighbor, or anywhere privacy matters more than the view, roller shades in an opacity that matches the room's function. Many whole-home projects end up using both — solar shades on the view-facing rooms, roller shades on the street-facing ones — rather than picking one for the entire house.

Quick questions

Can both types be used in the same room on different windows?

Yes, and it's a common, practical solution when a room has mixed exposures.

Which one is better for heat control?

Roller shades in a blackout or heavier fabric block more heat outright; solar shades manage heat while keeping the view, which is a different tradeoff, not a lesser one.

Does one cost more than the other?

Pricing is generally comparable at similar quality tiers — the decision usually comes down to view versus opacity, not cost.
