Which Roman-Shade Style, Fabric, and Lining Will Give My Room the Look, Privacy, and Light Control I Want?
By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County
Roman shades are where we see the most disappointment when they're ordered from a picture, because three separate choices decide how the finished shade actually looks.
The fold style sets the look, the fabric sets the texture and light behavior, and the lining sets the actual privacy and UV protection — all three need to be chosen together, not separately, or the finished shade won't match what you pictured.
The fold styles, briefly. A flat-fold Roman shade reads tailored and architectural when raised or lowered. A relaxed or soft-fold style has a gentler, more casual drape. Hobbled folds stay softly gathered even when fully raised, which some people love and others find too busy for a clean modern room. The right one depends on the room's overall style more than any technical factor.
Why lining matters as much as fabric. An unlined Roman shade lets in the most light and shows the least privacy — fine for a formal dining room, less fine for a bedroom facing the street. A privacy lining blocks view-through while still allowing light. A blackout lining, standard on many bedroom Roman shades, controls both light and UV exposure, protecting the fabric itself from fading in Tampa Bay's strong sun over time.
What I'd do. For a living or dining room, I often go unlined or lightly lined to let the fabric's color and texture do the work. For a bedroom, especially anything getting direct afternoon sun, I default to blackout lining — it protects the investment in the fabric as much as it controls light.
Quick questions
Do Roman shades work well with patterned or textured fabric?
Yes — the fold structure actually shows off pattern and texture better than a flat roller shade does.
How much does lining add to the cost?
It varies by fabric and lining type, but it's a modest addition relative to the protection and light control it adds.
Can Roman shades be motorized?
Yes, and it's a clean option for larger or hard-to-reach windows.
