Can Sheer Shades Soften Florida Sun and Preserve My View Without Sacrificing Privacy — Especially at Night?

By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County

People who choose sheer shades usually love their view and hate the glare. The question we hear most is what happens to privacy once it gets dark outside.

Sheer shades are excellent during the day at softening harsh sun, cutting UV, and keeping your view intact — daytime privacy is genuinely good because of the fabric's construction. At night, like most sheer or light-filtering fabrics, that privacy drops off once your interior lights are on.

What makes them different from a solar shade. A sheer shading fabric — the style Hunter Douglas built its Silhouette line around — uses two layers of fabric with horizontal vanes suspended between them, rather than a single woven screen. The vanes can be tilted to control light and view-through independently of raising or lowering the shade, which gives you a level of control a flat fabric shade doesn't offer.

The most common reason we hear this question is a bright room with a view worth keeping — a water view, a pool, a garden — where the owner doesn't want to trade the view for glare control.

What I'd do. For rooms with strong daytime sun and a view worth preserving, sheer shades are one of the better matches available — they diffuse harsh light into something soft rather than blocking it outright. For rooms that are occupied and lit after dark and face a street or a close neighbor, I'd add a room-darkening liner option or plan a second treatment for full nighttime privacy, the same as I would for a solar shade.

Quick questions

Do sheer shades block UV?

Yes, meaningfully — they're a strong choice for protecting furniture and flooring from fade while still keeping the room bright.

Can the vanes tilt for privacy without lowering the shade?

Yes — that's one of the main advantages over a flat solar or roller shade.

Is there a blackout option for sheer shades?

Room-darkening liner add-ons exist for bedrooms, though full blackout isn't the strength of this product category.
