Can Solar Shades Give Me Privacy at Night, or Do I Need a Second Treatment?

By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County

Solar shades look perfect the day they go in. Then the sun goes down, the lamps come on, and a lot of Largo homeowners realize the street can see right in.

Solar shades give you excellent privacy during the day and very little at night. That surprises people, and it's worth knowing before you order, not after.

Why it flips. During daylight, there's more light outside than inside, so the fabric reads as nearly opaque from the street or the pool deck — people outside see the shade, not you. Once the sun goes down and your interior lights come on, that balance reverses. Now there's more light inside than out, and the same fabric that hid you all day becomes far more see-through than most people expect.

This comes up constantly with pool-facing and street-facing rooms — a living room or primary bedroom where daytime privacy was never a concern, and nighttime privacy wasn't on anyone's radar until the lights went on the first evening.

What actually solves it. A dual shade system — a solar shade layered with a blackout or room-darkening roller on the same headrail — gives you the view and heat control during the day and real privacy at night, operated independently or together. For rooms where the view matters less after dark, like a bedroom, a single switch to a light-filtering or blackout shade at night works fine too. Drapery layered over a solar shade is the more traditional answer and adds softness to the room in the process.

What I'd do. For any room that's occupied and lit after dark and faces a street, a neighbor, or a pool deck, I plan for the second layer from the start rather than adding it later — it's a cleaner install and it's usually a smaller cost increase than people expect when it's part of the original order.

Quick questions

Does a darker solar shade fabric help with nighttime privacy?

A little, but not enough to solve it on its own — the light differential is the bigger factor.

Do I need the second layer on every window?

No — interior hallways, bathrooms, and windows that aren't visible from outside usually don't need it.

Can both shades be motorized together?

Yes, dual shades commonly run on the same motorized headrail with independent controls for each layer.
