Do Woven Wood Shades Give Enough Privacy, or Do I Need a Liner — and How Will the Liner Change the Look?

By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County

Woven wood shades are one of the most requested looks for coastal homes, and the question that comes up right after the sample is about privacy.

An unlined woven wood shade gives beautiful texture and a soft, natural glow, but limited privacy, since light and some view-through pass between the natural fibers even when closed. A liner solves that, and the tradeoff is a small but real one worth understanding: the liner changes the glow and softens the natural-material look that draws most people to woven wood in the first place.

Why the glow matters to this decision. Part of what makes woven wood shades distinctive is the warm, textured light that filters through the natural material when the sun hits it — many people choose this product specifically for that effect. A privacy liner behind the material blocks view-through and adds real privacy, but it also reduces or eliminates that signature glow, since it's now blocking most of what was passing through.

What the liner options actually do. A light-filtering or privacy liner adds view-blocking without going fully opaque, a middle ground that preserves some of the natural warmth while solving the privacy gap. A full blackout liner adds complete light and privacy control, but changes the shade's character the most — appropriate for a bedroom, less so for a room where the natural woven look is the whole point.

What I'd do. For a living room, dining room, or any space where the natural texture and glow are central to the design and street-facing privacy isn't a major concern, I often recommend leaving it unlined or adding only a light liner. For a bedroom or any window facing a street or close neighbor, a full liner is worth the tradeoff in glow for the privacy gained.

Quick questions

Do liners come in different colors to match the room?

Yes, most liner options are available in a few neutral tones to coordinate with the interior.

Does a liner make the shade heavier or harder to operate?

Slightly, but not enough to meaningfully change day-to-day operation for most shade sizes.

Can I add a liner later if I start unlined?

In some cases yes, though it's simpler and more cost-effective to decide at the time of the original order.
