Wood, Composite, or Poly: Which Shutter Material Will Look Best and Hold Up in Tampa Bay Humidity and Sun?

By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County

Material is the one shutter decision you can't undo, and in Tampa Bay humidity it's also the one that decides whether the shutters still look right in ten years.

For most Tampa Bay homes, a quality composite or poly shutter holds up to humidity and coastal air more reliably than real wood, without giving up much on appearance. Real wood still has a place — mainly in fully conditioned interior rooms with stable humidity — but material is genuinely the most important long-term decision in this category, more than style or louver size.

Why material matters more here than up north. Wood is a natural material that responds to humidity by expanding and contracting. In a consistently conditioned home that's manageable; in a coastal climate with salt air, high ambient humidity, and rooms that see temperature swings, it's a bigger risk over the life of the shutter. Composite and poly materials are engineered specifically to resist that — they don't absorb moisture the way wood does, and quality poly shutters are built to resist warping, cracking, and fading from UV exposure.

What each actually looks like. A well-finished composite or poly shutter, in a satin or matte finish, is genuinely difficult to distinguish from painted wood at a normal viewing distance. Real wood's advantage shows up more in stained, natural-grain finishes, where the material itself is part of the look.

What I'd do. For most rooms in a Tampa Bay home — especially anything near a bathroom, kitchen, or with regular humidity exposure — I recommend composite or poly. For a formal room with a stained, natural-wood finish as part of the design intent, and full climate control, real wood is still a legitimate choice, with the tradeoff understood up front.

Quick questions

Do composite shutters really never warp or fade?

Quality composite and poly products are engineered to resist both far better than wood, though "never" depends on the specific manufacturer's warranty terms.

Is real wood ever the better choice in Florida?

Yes, in fully conditioned, low-humidity interior rooms where a natural wood-grain look is central to the design.

Does material affect louver size options?

Not usually — most manufacturers offer the full louver range in both wood and composite lines.
