Why Do Roller Shades Have Side Light Gaps, and What Should I Choose for Real Darkness or Nighttime Privacy?

By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County

We get this call a lot: new roller shades, a beautiful fit, and a thin line of light down each side that keeps someone awake at 6 a.m. It feels like a defect. It usually isn't.

An inside-mounted roller shade needs a small gap on each side to operate without rubbing against the window frame — it's mechanical, not a manufacturing flaw. If total darkness or full nighttime privacy matters for the room, the fix is a mounting or hardware choice made at the time of order, not something you can add after the fact without extra hardware.

Why the gap exists. The fabric roll needs clearance to rotate freely inside the window opening. Without it, the shade would drag against the frame every time it moved. That clearance is usually small — often well under half an inch per side — but in a fully dark room it's enough to notice, especially with interior lighting on behind the shade.

This shows up most in bedrooms and media rooms, and especially on west-facing rooms where afternoon light is strong enough to push through even a small gap.

What actually closes it. Outside mounting — hanging the shade above and beyond the window frame rather than inside it — eliminates side gaps almost entirely since the fabric covers past the opening on both sides. Side channels or tracks are the other real fix, guiding the fabric edge along a slim track for close to full blackout without changing to an outside mount. Layering with drapery panels is the softer, less technical solution and works well when the room's style already calls for it.

What I'd do. For a room where total darkness genuinely matters — most commonly a primary bedroom for shift workers, or a home theater — I recommend outside mount with a blackout fabric from the start. For everyone else, the gap is rarely worth the mounting change, and inside mount keeps the cleaner, more finished window look most people actually want.

Quick questions

Does an outside mount cost more?

Sometimes slightly, mainly due to hardware sizing, but it's a modest difference for the darkness gained.

Do side channels work with motorized shades?

Yes, though the track needs to be planned into the install rather than retrofitted easily.

Is the gap noticeable during the day?

Almost never — it's really only an issue with interior lights on after dark or in a room used for daytime sleep.
