Why Does Custom Drapery Cost What It Does — and When Is It Worth the Investment?
By Joe Cortese, owner of Accolade Interiors · 35 years installing window treatments in Pinellas County
The first custom drapery quote often surprises people, especially when they've seen ready-made panels for a fraction of the price.
Custom drapery costs more than off-the-shelf curtains because nearly every element — fabric yardage, fullness, lining, hardware, and installation — is built to the exact window, not a standard size. It's worth the investment for large or architecturally important windows, whole-room design moments, and any window where an off-the-shelf panel would look visibly thin or short.
Where the cost actually goes. Fullness is the biggest hidden factor — a tailored, elevated drapery look uses significantly more fabric width than a flat, ready-made panel, which is exactly why cheap curtains often look skimpy hung in a nice room. Lining adds cost but also adds function: privacy, light control, UV protection, and better drape and hang. Custom hardware, precise length to the floor or a specific break, and professional installation round out the difference between drapery that looks tailored and drapery that looks like it came off a rack.
When it's genuinely worth it. Large windows, sliding glass walls, and tall ceilings are where custom drapery earns its keep most clearly — ready-made panels simply aren't built long or full enough to look intentional at that scale. It's also the right call for a room where drapery is doing real design work, not just covering a window — framing a view, adding color or texture, or softening a room full of hard surfaces.
What I'd do. For a large or architecturally significant window, I recommend custom drapery without hesitation — it's one of the more visible investments in a room and it shows. For a smaller, secondary window with no special view or design role, a quality ready-made option can be a reasonable place to save.
Quick questions
Does custom drapery always mean floor-length?
No, though floor-length or a slight break at the floor is the most common choice for a tailored look.
Can custom drapery be paired with shades on the same window?
Yes, and it's a common approach — drapery for softness and framing, shades for daily light and privacy control.
Is custom drapery a good investment if I might move in a few years?
It adds real value to how a room presents and shows well, though it is built to that specific window and generally doesn't transfer to a new home.
